Honduras Cookstoves

dot desktop

ABOUT

In Honduras, traditional open-fire cooking is wasteful, dirty, dangerous, and slow. These improved cookstoves are durable, cost-effective, and meet all the family’s cooking needs. They are custom built of brick and mortar with chimneys, and the rocket elbow design means that it takes less wood to cook more food more quickly. Each family stove saves about 3 tons of carbon pollution from entering the atmosphere each year – resulting in nearly two million tons of carbon dioxide reduced by the project. Families save money by buying less wood or save time gathering wood, rid the house of smoke, and, in a Dos por Tres (In an instant), help save our planet.

BENEFITS

  • Over 18,000 hours of training a year is focused on stove maintenance and tips to reduce fuel wood use.
  • There’s been a 79% reduction in carbon monoxide and particulate matter inside the home due to stopping the use of wood-burning stoves.
  • There have been 26 businesses and 172 jobs created.
  • Families do not buy a stove, they co-invest in one. They provide bricks and mortar, the project provides construction, know-how, and specialized stove parts.
